{"id":915,"date":"2011-12-19T10:20:41","date_gmt":"2011-12-19T15:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=915"},"modified":"2013-06-12T15:32:21","modified_gmt":"2013-06-12T19:32:21","slug":"ask-naomi-but-i-want-to-be-a-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=915","title":{"rendered":"Ask Naomi: But I want to be a Librarian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While one of my great missions with INALJ is to expose library staff and librarians to jobs outside the \u201cL\u201d word\/world by focusing on your skill sets, if you have really asked yourself do I want a job or a library job and answered \u201clibrary, definitely\u201d then what can you do to get a job in a library? When we look at skill sets we need to also look at programs, software and other technologies that will make us more attractive to hiring managers. Depending on what type of library you want to work in you may want to take classes or practice the online modules in the following:<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ideas based on my own experience- this is in no way, shape or form comprehensive..<\/p>\n<p><b>Academic Libraries<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/captivate.html\"> Adobe Captivate<\/a> is an eLearning content system and often used for presentations<\/li>\n<li>Like Captivate there are other <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comparison_of_screencasting_software\"> Screencasting software<\/a> which Wikipedia has covered here<\/li>\n<li>SmartBoard technologies- well worth looking into as many schools still use this for presentations<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with LiveChat technologies like <a href=\"http:\/\/chat.aim.com\/\"> AIM <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meebo.com\/messenger\"> Meebo <\/a>are key<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Public Libraries<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Familiarity with LiveChat technologies like <a href=\"http:\/\/chat.aim.com\/\"> AIM <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meebo.com\/messenger\"> Meebo <\/a>are key<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Government Libraries <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft Office Suite is invaluable as it is standard in government communications, particularly <a href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/excel\/\"> Excel<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Special Libraries<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowing cheap\/affordable ILS systems is key- <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Integrated_library_system#Examples\"> Wikipedia lists some of them here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is just a beginning set- a brief list.
