{"id":874,"date":"2011-12-15T08:59:37","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T13:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=874"},"modified":"2011-12-15T08:59:46","modified_gmt":"2011-12-15T13:59:46","slug":"recipe-soothing-italian-hot-chocolate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=874","title":{"rendered":"Recipe: Soothing Italian Hot Chocolate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><body><br \/>\n<i>via INALJ daily email Assistant Editor Kelli Bragg<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the amazing Coconut Curry Chocolate bar made byTheo\u2019s (in Seattle) this is my ultimate comfort beverage in winter.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hotcocoa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hotcocoa-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"hotcocoa\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-875\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can make your own favorite hot chocolate recipe and just add \u00bc tsp curry powder per serving, or use my favorite cocoa recipe, Italian Hot Cocoa, from The All New All Purpose Joy of Cooking:<\/p>\n<p>Italian Hot Cocoa  2 \u00bd c.<br \/>\n<i>(even without the curry, it\u2019s wonderfully comforting)<\/i><\/p>\n<li>Stir together in a medium, heavy saucepan:<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>  \u00bd c. unsweetened cocoa (I use Penzey\u2019s 24% butterfat natural cocoa) <\/li>\n<li>            1\/3 c. sugar\n<\/li>\n<li>            1 tsp. cornstarch or arrowroot\n<\/li>\n<li>           \u00bd tsp. curry powder (I use Penzey\u2019s Balti-style curry powder: it\u2019s a hot, but not blazing, curry blend)\n<\/li>\n<p>\nNote: I suggest starting with \u00bc tsp curry powder, then increase to taste.<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<li>Stir in thoroughly, then set over low heat:\n<\/li>\n<li>          \u00bd c. water\n<\/li>\n<p>\nOnce warmed, stir in:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<li>        \u00bd c. water\n<\/li>\n<li>        1 c whole milk\n<\/li>\n<p>\nCook, stirring over medium-low heat until the mixture is thickened and coats a spoon, about 10 minutes.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWhisk in 1\/8 tsp. vanilla or \u00bd tsp. Grand Marnier or Kahlua, then continue whisking for at least 30 seconds to aerate &#038; fluff, to create an effect similar to that of using a Mexican molinillo)<br \/>\n<br \/> <br \/>\nTop each serving with:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<li>        Ground cinnamon\n<\/li>\n<li>         Whipped cream or marshmallows (I prefer homemade marshmallows or homemade marshmallow cream, if I have them) <\/li>\n<p>\nMakes as many servings as you like; I get 2 servings from the recipe.<\/p>\n<p><i>Photo from <a href= \"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/george_eastman_house\/3123692128\/sizes\/m\/in\/photostream\/\"> Flickr George Eastman House<\/a>.
