A mentor can be anyone who is willing to invest time and commit\u00a0to helping one accomplish his or her goals. Ideally, a mentor is also a mentee. Serving in both roles can\u00a0increase your value as a mentor and provide an enhanced perspective from which to answer questions\u00a0and guide your own mentee. The following articles highlight different types of mentoring, how to be an\u00a0effective mentor, and the mentor-mentee relationship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/newCDV_24.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mentoring Skills<\/a> \u2013 This article from MindTools notes the differences between two types of mentoring:\u00a0developmental &amp; sponsorship. The skills discussed focus on developmental mentoring, and can help you\u00a0learn how to be an efficient mentor by providing feedback and setting regular meetings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ala-apa.org\/newsletter\/2013\/11\/10\/exploring-mentoring-professional-development-through-relationship-building\/\" target=\"_blank\">Exploring Mentoring: Professional Development through Relationship Building<\/a> (by Braegan C.\u00a0Abernethy and Kari D. Weaver) \u2013 Terrific resource to help one understand the potential benefits of\u00a0being a mentee or a mentor. The authors provide advice for finding a mentor through an established\u00a0program or independently and helps one plan for success through having well-defined goals and\u00a0expectations of the mentor\/mentee program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lac-group.com\/asking-someone-to-mentor-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to Ask Someone to Mentor You<\/a> (by Kim Dority) \u2013 Kim Dority tackles the challenging topic of how\u00a0to find a mentor that is well-suited to help you identify and achieve your goals. Also, just as important,\u00a0she provides guidance on how to ask for help. Being a mentor can be a large commitment; therefore, it\u00a0makes most sense to have clear objectives and a candidate identified prior to getting started.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/kp361\/mentoring-ppt-39371077\" target=\"_blank\">Mentoring Presentation Slideshow<\/a> (by Kirstie Preest) \u2013 A basic introduction to mentorship programs. In\u00a0addition to defining roles and goals, this slideshow also describes the importance of defining mentor\/\u00a0mentee expectations through creating a mentorship agreement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jacquelynsmith\/2013\/05\/17\/how-to-become-a-great-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to Be a Great Mentor<\/a> (by Jacquelyn Smith) \u2013 The author of this article shares that mentoring is a\u00a0big responsibility which can bring a great deal of personal satisfaction. Nine ways to be a great mentor\u00a0are noted, one of which discusses the importance of being both a mentor and a mentee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thecogentcoach.com\/mentoring-in-small-business\" target=\"_blank\">Mentoring in Small Business<\/a> (by Michael Nelson) \u2013 The author includes basic information about\u00a0mentor programs and provides an infographic from Sainsbury Management Fellows that describes\u00a0mentorship. This infographic defines key elements of the mentorship process, and is a perfect visual aid\u00a0for conveying the goals of mentorship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themuse.com\/advice\/the-3-career-mentors-everyone-should-have\" target=\"_blank\">The 3 Career Mentors Everyone Should Have<\/a> (by Noelle Roth) \u2013 This article suggests identifying and\u00a0working with a different mentor for short-term goals and long-term goals. In addition, another mentor\u00a0may serve as a career advisor to help plan a rewarding professional development path.
