5 Creative writing tips to enhance your communication skills<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"kristincharlesscaringi\"<\/a>Before I took my seat at the reference desk of a public library I could be found at a computer\u00a0writing. I found that my professional background as a journalist and public relations writer,\u00a0as well as my experience as a creative writing student are an asset to my current career as a\u00a0librarian.<\/p>\n

Solid communication skills are required in the real world. You see it mentioned in every job\u00a0description out there. It is important that we all be able to communicate effectively with one\u00a0another, especially when we are trying to work together. And in today\u2019s world of abbreviated\u00a0written communication (e.g., text messaging, emails, Twitter), it is even more important to\u00a0revisit the need for good writing skills.<\/p>\n

In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo<\/a>), I am sharing some creative writing\u00a0rules that apply to communication skills we should develop and strengthen as we promote\u00a0ourselves and our libraries.<\/p>\n

1. Show, don\u2019t tell<\/strong> \u2013 This was the credo<\/a> all my professors lived, worked and taught by. It\u00a0is crucial in today\u2019s job search. Gone are the days of listing your job responsibilities on\u00a0your resume, now you must describe your accomplishments, projects and results.<\/p>\n

2. Use an active voice<\/strong> \u2013 Use active words<\/a>. You see this command when reading articles\u00a0on how to write that dynamite resume and cover letter. When you use the active\u00a0voice rather than a passive voice<\/a>, you are show the action being taken and this is more\u00a0effective in resonating with potential employers.<\/p>\n

3. Tell a story<\/strong> \u2013 Storytelling<\/a> a powerful tool in applying for a job. You want your resume to\u00a0resonate with potential employers. Stories are a way to make a human connection<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4. Be yourself<\/strong> \u2013 To thine own self be true! When communicating, be honest and open.\u00a0There is no room in the application process for exaggeration and falsifying your\u00a0experiences. Also, if you are true to who you are, you will be more comfortable and\u00a0confident when going for that dream job.<\/p>\n

5. Use good grammar<\/strong> – Nothing will send your job application to the reject pile faster\u00a0than a spelling or grammar mistake. Always have a second set of eyes read over your\u00a0application!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
