Say What, Again? Awesome Nature Sound Libraries<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"IMG_4385\"<\/a>In a previous post, I shared some truly wonderful oral history libraries<\/a> of all kinds that capture the major\u00a0events of humankind through the collective voices of those who lived through them. But what about\u00a0the voices of our animal friends? Have you ever heard wondered what bird is making that particularly\u00a0pleasing sound in your backyard? Or expanding your world further, where you can find the natural\u00a0world voices of the world\u2019s rainforests, the American West, or the African Savanna? I give you some\u00a0awesome online nature sound libraries:<\/p>\n

1. Macaulay Library<\/a>:<\/strong> This one is for the birds! Presented by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the\u00a0Macaulay Library, which contains more than 175,000 audio recordings of 75% of the world’s bird\u00a0species, will have you loving birds! Listen to the Redhead Duck<\/a>, the Scaly-Breasted Wren<\/a>, and\u00a0the Montezuma Oropendola<\/a>, for example. The library also includes an increasing number of\u00a0insect, fish, frog, and mammal recordings. You can submit your own nature sound recordings to\u00a0be archived, and\/or attend the library\u2019s sound recording workshops to gain hands-on experience\u00a0in recording technique and theory. You can also order digital audio guides from the library\u2019s\u00a0online store, some for free, such as this Bird Songs of Florida<\/a> sampler!<\/p>\n

2. Acoustic Atlas<\/a>:<\/strong> An initiative of the Montana State University Library, this online library features\u00a0the natural world sounds of the American West. Here you will find the voices of the Boreal\u00a0Chorus Frog<\/a>, the American Beaver<\/a>, and the Coyote<\/a>. Browse recordings by title or species,\u00a0and\/or listen to interviews with noted biologists, entomologists, and other scientists on the\u00a0significance of many animal and insect sounds.<\/p>\n

3. Listening to Nature: A Sound Walk Across California<\/a>:<\/strong> From the Oakland Museum of California\u2019s\u00a0Library of Natural Sounds, this online version of the museum\u2019s Walk Across California galley will\u00a0have you exploring the many and varied nature sounds of the Sierran Foothills<\/a>, the California\u00a0Coastal Mountains<\/a>, and the Central Valley<\/a>. Be prepared to be awed and amazed!<\/p>\n

4. British Library Sounds<\/a>:<\/strong> The British Library has one of the world\u2019s largest sound collections\u00a0covering a broad range of subjects. Its Environment and Nature<\/a> library includes bird, amphibian,\u00a0and mammal, reptile and insect sounds from all over the world. Hear Haddock<\/a> knocking sounds\u00a0(yes, fish can talk!), Koala<\/a> grunts, and the call of the Indian Gharial<\/a> (fish-eating crocodile). It\u2019s all\u00a0here for your listening pleasure!<\/p>\n

Library sound collections are crucial to the study and preservation of our environment. Explore these\u00a0libraries so the next time you hear an unfamiliar and intriguing natural world sound, you\u2019ll be able to\u00a0identify it, and understand and appreciate the significance and importance of sound to the survival of\u00a0most animal species.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
