A Maker\u00a0Faire, an event created by Make: magazine, is known as the greatest show-and-tell\u00a0on earth that celebrates DIY projects. A Maker may be either a hobbyist or an expert:\u00a0anyone in a community who simply loves what he or she does. The Faires offer a\u00a0unique opportunity for diverse groups to connect while sharing their creations. With\u00a0projects ranging from knit designs and urban gardening to programming drones and\u00a0building robots, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. Hosting a Mini Maker\u00a0Faire and\/or installing a Maker area in your library are dynamic ways to promote hands-<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">on learning that will certainly support your library\u2019s mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following resources will introduce you to the Maker Movement and guide you\u00a0through the licensing and planning processes:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/makermedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Media<\/a> Make:<\/strong> magazine, Make:, Maker Faires, and MakerShed are brands of\u00a0Maker Media. This site links to each brand, provides logos and banners for promoting\u00a0Faires, and shares press releases. Educational initiatives are also highlighted.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Make<\/a>:<\/strong> The Internet companion to Make: magazine. Features digital versions of Make:\u00a0magazine, including back issues. Highlights DIY ideas, open source projects and\u00a0educational events. Don\u2019t miss the extensive video collection and blog that presents\u00a0even more ideas and Makers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/makerfaire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Faire<\/a> :<\/strong>\u00a0 This site shares the story of the Maker Movement and highlights Maker\u00a0Faires across the globe. Contains a master toolkit and links to purchase event tickets.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/makerfaire.com\/mini\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mini Maker Faires:<\/a><\/strong> A planning tool and also contains a link to the application for the\u00a0required license to organize a Mini Maker Faire.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.makershed.com\/?gclid=CNedociUi74CFcJqfgodHkQA3A\" target=\"_blank\">MakerShed:<\/a><\/strong> The official store where DIY project supplies and kits are sold.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/makerspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MakerSpace:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong> Request a free MakerSpace Playbook that details everything you need to\u00a0know about how to plan a MakerSpace.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have received your license and are familiar with how to organize an event,\u00a0there are few limits to the type of program you can provide to the members in your\u00a0community. For example, you can offer a <a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/3d-printing\/\" target=\"_blank\">3-d printing workshop<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/category\/maker-pro\/open-source-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\">open source event<\/a>,\u00a0or a program catered to <a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/category\/art-design\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\">music makers<\/a>. Alternatively, you could provide a tinkering\u00a0studio for patrons to enjoy daily. Consider a planning team to maximize your ideas and\u00a0gather support for your event. Collaborating with the Maker community will provide\u00a0valuable input and ensure that the Makers have the appropriate environment for a\u00a0successful Faire.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a sampling of Mini Maker Faires at libraries:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/makerfaireanchorage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anchorage Mini Maker Faire \u2013 Loussac Library<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/San-Diego-Mini-Maker-Faire\/events\/177450952\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMicro\u201d Maker Faire at the Library \u2013 North University Community Library \u2013 San Diego<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themakersnation.com\/toronto-mini-maker-faire-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Mini Maker Faire \u2013 Toronto Reference Library<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Libraries are community learning centers, ideal for hosting Maker spaces and events.\u00a0Maker programs will share a variety of talents and foster a curiosity for design, craft\u00a0skills, science, and technology.
