&#8211;African proverb<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n*****<\/p>\n<p>It was my pleasure to present and serve on the Breakout Talk panel, <a href=\"http:\/\/oclc.org\/en-europe\/events\/EMEARC\/sessions.html\" target=\"_blank\">We Built a Community!<\/a> at the fifth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/oclc.org\/en-europe\/events\/EMEARC.html\" target=\"_blank\">OCLC EMEA regional council meeting<\/a> on February 24, 2014.\u00a0 The focus of the conference was, <a href=\"http:\/\/oclc.org\/en-europe\/events\/EMEARC\/Programme.html\" target=\"_blank\">Library Community in Action: advancing knowledge, collaboration and innovation<\/a>.\u00a0 The African proverb that inspired this theme, \u201c<strong>if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together,<\/strong>\u201d is very much at the heart of<a title=\"To Volunteers, With Love\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=61683\" target=\"_blank\"> INALJ&#8217;s community of volunteers<\/a>.\u00a0 We strive as <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAM01597.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65923 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAM01597-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"CAM01597\" width=\"158\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAM01597-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAM01597-768x1024.jpg 768w, \/><\/a>a team and as individuals to provide job hunters in the US, Canada and internationally, with well sourced quantity and quality jobs for information professionals, such as librarians.<a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/naomi-at-oclc-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-65927 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/naomi-at-oclc-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"naomi at oclc 1\" width=\"96\" height=\"144\" https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/naomi-at-oclc-1-666x999.jpg 666w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was privileged to speak with Stephanie Diakit\u00e9 and Dr. Buhle Mbambo-Thata and our talk was facilitated by OCLC&#8217;s Fiona Leslie.\u00a0 From saving manuscripts from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/timbuktu-libraries-in-exile\" target=\"_blank\">Timbuktu through an indiegogo<\/a> campaign, to collaborations between a public library system and local colleges, to building a volunteer base from the grassroots up, our talks all focused on building cooperation through new channels of collaboration.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Our Presentations<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stephanie Diakit\u00e9 <\/strong>spoke about crowdsourcing and the T160K \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/media.uoregon.edu\/channel\/2013\/03\/13\/stephanie-diakite-the-evacuation-of-the-tumbuktu-manuscripts-and-their-life-in-exile-the-work-of-t160k\/\" target=\"_blank\">Timbuktu Knowledge for Peace Initiative <\/a>Indiegogo Campaign.\u00a0 She focused on the successes including raising over $60k as well as what she would do differently.\u00a0 She will be working further with the rescued manuscripts to help build a team to catalog them.\u00a0 She was also a keynote speaker on <a href=\"http:\/\/oclc.org\/en-europe\/events\/EMEARC\/plenary.html\" target=\"_blank\">the story of the Timbuktu Archives\u00a0<\/a> and the dramatic rescue of over 300,000 manuscripts to Mali from Timbuktu by her colleague Abdel Kader Haidara, where they were nearly destroyed.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Buhle Mbambo-Thata <\/strong>spoke about a fantastic collaboration between the UNISA (University of South Africa) Library and Tshwane City Libraries.\u00a0 Recognizing that the students who attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/team-we-built-a-community-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65932 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/team-we-built-a-community-2-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"team we built a community 2\" width=\"210\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/team-we-built-a-community-2-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/team-we-built-a-community-2.jpg 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>university were mostly community members, the university and city libraries collaborated on an initiative that based its premise on the shared community of students that both served.\u00a0 Buhle published findings in <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.lib.purdue.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1980&amp;context=iatul\" target=\"_blank\">2013 in the Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences<\/a>.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong><strong>Naomi House\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> spoke about the founding of <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\" target=\"_blank\">INALJ.com<\/a> and how she cultivated a group of 180 volunteers.\u00a0 Focusing mostly on the strategic aspects of the process including successes and failures.\u00a0 Constructing a community takes a strong core (in this case one leader), a set of boundaries or set constrictions establishing what the group is as well as what it is not, and the cooperation of all involved.\u00a0 There was great interest in founding INALJ Africa pages for several countries and I look forward to launching several this year!<strong><strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>OCLC EMEA and beyond<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The 2014 Meeting addressed the importance of \u2018library as community\u2019 and what the greater collaboration between libraries can really offer, as well as the concept in the context of sharing and innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/oclc.org\/en-europe\/events\/EMEARC\/Programme.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>spotlighted areas of community-based activity <\/strong>for the 2014 EMEA Regional Council Meeting<\/a> were the following:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Advocacy<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Research<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Shared Services<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Technology &amp; Innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the breakout talks presentations were made by some of South Africa&#8217;s most esteemed librarians and OCLC leaders such as OCLC President <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skipprichard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Skip Pritchard<\/a><\/strong>; OCLC EMEARegional Council Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/oclc.org\/en-CA\/global-council-directory\/profiles.html?memberId=1344\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Robert Moropa<\/strong><\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/charlesleadbeater.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Charles Leadbeater<\/strong><\/a>, an independent and strategic adviser on innovation; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifla.org\/past-presidents\/archive\/tise\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ellen Tise<\/strong><\/a>, Senior Director of Library and Information Services at Stellenbosch; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisa.ac.za\/default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&amp;ContentID=95628\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>John Tsebe<\/strong><\/a> of the National Library of South Africa; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oclc.org\/about\/trustees\/members\/lison-barbara.en.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Barbara Lison<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tonvvl\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ton van Vlimmeren<\/strong><\/a> spoke to their European campaigns using <a href=\"http:\/\/geekthelibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Geek the Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite presentations was the Lightning Talks portion of the program.\u00a0 Denyse Knipe of Tshwane University of Technology, Nazeem Hardy of the City of Cape Town Library and Information Services Department, Anne-Lise Fourie of the Biodiversity Heritage Library Africa, and Mpho Regina Masienyane of the Lintle Community Awakening\u00a0 power packed into 5 minutes each far more than I could have anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>The depth and breadth of presenters made this conference one of my all time favorites!<\/p>\n<p>For me one of my favorite aspects of attending a conference where I truly do not know anyone at all is the<a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65931 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6350\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350-386x290.jpg 386w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350-290x218.jpg 290w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350-193x145.jpg 193w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_6350.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a> how much my community grows during the experience.\u00a0 I have gone into some detail about my favorite community building experience at OCLC EMEA, <strong><a title=\"We Built a Community (on the rocky sea)\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=65533\" target=\"_blank\">riding the boat back from Robben Island<\/a>,<\/strong> but I was also delighted at how many connections I met as well, including fellow Rutgers MLIS graduates and Wayne State&#8217;s own Sandy Yee, was also in attendance.\u00a0 Also a big thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/mabafokeng-makara\/18\/173\/880\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8216;Mabafokeng<\/strong> <strong>Makara<\/strong><\/a>, of the National University of Lesotho who kept us company on the boat ride and at dinner the next day.<\/p>\n<p>I was also able to speak with <a href=\"http:\/\/liasa.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>LIASA<\/strong><\/a> (Library and Information Association of South Africa) <a href=\"http:\/\/liasa.org.za\/node\/434\" target=\"_blank\">president Ujala Satgoor<\/a>, and found out the many ways that South African librarians are celebrating 20 years of democracy since the end of apartheid<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oclc.org\/events.en.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>OCLC has many opportunities for librarians to serve on committees and many conferences you can attend globally.<\/strong><\/a> I know I will be attending more in the future.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Attending conferences<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just do it!\u00a0 I am always looking for conferences when I travel because I gain so much from them.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t fret about missing this opportunity in beautiful Cape Town; <a href=\"http:\/\/conference.ifla.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IFLA is in Cape Town<\/strong> <\/a>in 2015!\u00a0 I know I want to be there and hope to see you there as
