I took a look at the job posting, and I didn\u2019t meet the qualifications, so I didn\u2019t apply. The job was reposted a few months later, and this time I thought I was more qualified, so I applied. By the time I heard back, 3 months later, I\u2019d already given up on the job, so I was pleasantly surprised! I put up a post about interviewing and negotiating for my current position at <a href=\"http:\/\/derangementanddescription.wordpress.com\/2011\/\">http:\/\/derangementanddescription.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/19\/an-edgy-easter-bunny-crossed-with-a-great-white-that-does-standup.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Tell us a little bit more about what a media and digital services librarian does.<br \/>\n<b>Rebecca:\u00a0 <\/b>A little bit of everything! I do collection development for library videos. I manage our digitization projects and digital collections. I supervise the University Archivist and the library\u2019s audiovisual department. I do copyright advisory for faculty and staff. I run La Salle\u2019s institutional repository. I do library outreach. Sometimes I feel like I\u2019m being pulled in too many directions at once, but as a new professional it\u2019s been wonderful to get such varied experience.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<b>Rebecca:\u00a0 <\/b>When I was stranded in Chicago after <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.archivists.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAA <\/a>(thanks Hurricane Irene!) an archivist who works at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newberry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newberry Library<\/a> offered me a behind-the-scenes tour. I thought my years working in an archives had desensitized me to the \u201cOMG I get to touch old stuff!\u201d excitement&#8230;I was wrong. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>As a kid, I went to my local library in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillipsfreelibrary.org\/phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homer, NY<\/a> (pop. 7,000) pretty regularly, but I always got really excited about going downtown to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flls.org\/cortlandlib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortland Free Library<\/a>, which had a playhouse where I could read the books I picked out.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<b>Rebecca:\u00a0 <\/b>Like libraries, it\u2019s hard to pick one favorite, but I\u2019ve had favorites at different times in my life. In elementary school I adored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0375869034\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0375869034&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Phantom Tollbooth<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B009CPN6SC\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B009CPN6SC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Westing Game<\/em><\/a>, and reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0590897985\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0590897985&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Music of Dolphins<\/em><\/a> in middle school changed the way I thought about writing and language.<\/p>\n<p>In high school I read everything then-published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=Christopher%20Moore&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Moore<\/a>, wh<b><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?attachment_id=6050\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6050\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6050 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/rebeccag2-e1358987903746.jpg\" alt=\"rebeccag2\" width=\"108\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a><\/b>o blew my mind by actually responding to my fan emails (sent from my AOL account, complete with signature in rainbow colors). As an adult, I\u2019ve loved <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0679735909\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0679735909&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Possession<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0613152425\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0613152425&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To Say Nothing of the Dog<\/a><\/em>. I just finished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0812976363\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0812976363&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=i0fe1-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Thousand Autumns<\/em> <em>of Jacob de Zoet<\/em> <\/a>and it\u2019s my newest favorite!<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Any websites, blogs or feeds we should be following?<br \/>\n<b>Rebecca:\u00a0 <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.askamanager.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ask a Manager<\/a> if you have a manager, are a manager, or would like to have\/be a manager someday. <a href=\"http:\/\/gavialib.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Library Loon<\/a> if you care about the future of academic libraries. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archivesnext.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArchivesNext<\/a> if you like archives and technology. The <a href=\"http:\/\/snaproundtable.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SNAP Roundtable blog<\/a> if you\u2019re a student or new archivist (and really, even if you\u2019re not).<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Any job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<b>Rebecca:\u00a0 <\/b>Be cautious of how you represent yourself online, especially in professional settings like listservs. If you\u2019re currently looking for a job, you have lots to complain about: a tough economy, terrible entry-level salary, rude employers who don\u2019t follow up on applications, insensitive colleagues who don\u2019t understand how hard it is to find a job right now. But when you make your complaints public, you can come across as a whiner, or as someone who feels entitled to a job- -not qualities that make you attractive to prospective employers. Venting is normal and healthy, but I\u2019d recommend doing it privately or off-line.<\/p>\n<p><i>Rebecca Goldman has been the Media and Digital Services Librarian at La Salle University\u2019s Connelly Library since October 2011. She previously held positions at the Drexel University Archives, the Drexel University Libraries, and the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. Rebecca has a BA in linguistics from Swarthmore College and an MS in library and information science from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ischool.drexel.edu\/CS\/GraduatePrograms\/MS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drexel University<\/a>.
