{"id":58784,"date":"2014-01-21T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T15:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=58784"},"modified":"2014-01-21T10:00:09","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T15:00:09","slug":"free-online-reference-resources-for-librarians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=58784","title":{"rendered":"Free Online Reference Resources for Librarians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Amanda May, former head editor, <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=56413\" target=\"_blank\">INALJ North Dakota<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Free Online Reference Resources for Librarians<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/amanda.may_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-58786 alignleft\" alt=\"amanda.may\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/amanda.may_-300x207.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/amanda.may_-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/amanda.may_.jpg 829w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>When sitting at the reference desk, I try my best to direct patrons to the library\u2019s resources, but sometimes, I find an online resource that may best fulfill their needs.\u00a0 These are some of my favorites.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> is one of the most well-known publishers of language-related reference works.\u00a0 This website includes a dictionary and thesaurus as well as many other resources, such as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/game\/index.htm\">Quizzes &amp; Games<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/word-of-the-day\/\">Word of the Day<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/visual.merriam-webster.com\/\">Visual Dictionary Online<\/a> connects words with images.\u00a0 Users can browse the 15 major themes to find various words and the corresponding image.\u00a0 The different parts of the image are labeled as well.\u00a0 I find this to be a great resource for English Language Learners.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/\">The Encyclopedia of Earth<\/a> is an online resource about the Earth, its natural environments, and their interaction with society.\u00a0 Patrons can use the Topic Navigator to browse various topics that are expert-reviewed.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/librivox.org\/\">LibriVox<\/a>\u2019s objective is \u201cto make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet.\u201d\u00a0 While majority of the audio books are in English, there are various titles in foreign language, such as French and Japanese.\u00a0 If the library doesn\u2019t own a specific public domain title in an audio format, this site provides a viable alternative.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.org\/\">STATS<\/a> website states that \u201cOur goals are to correct scientific misinformation in the media and in public policy resulting from bad science, politics, or a simple lack of information or knowledge; and to act as a resource for journalists and policymakers on major scientific issues and controversies.\u201d\u00a0 This website might be a good resource for high school or college students doing reports on major issues in today\u2019s society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Amanda May, former head editor, INALJ North Dakota Free Online Reference Resources for Librarians When sitting at the reference desk, I try my best to direct patrons to the library\u2019s resources, but sometimes, I find an online resource that may best fulfill their needs.\u00a0 These are some of my favorites.
