{"id":54740,"date":"2014-07-31T12:05:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T17:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=54740"},"modified":"2014-07-31T12:21:05","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T17:21:05","slug":"cold-feet-about-cold-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=54740","title":{"rendered":"Cold Feet About Cold Calling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Veda Darby Soberman, former Head Editor, <a title=\"INALJ Hawaii\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=56474\" target=\"_blank\">INALJ Hawaii<\/a><br \/>\npreviously published 12\/16\/13<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Cold Feet About Cold Calling<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/veda.darby_.soberman1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-58834\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/veda.darby_.soberman1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"veda.darby.soberman\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Cold calls have long been used by businesses to sell their services or products.\u00a0 We all dread those telemarketing calls, and junk emails, and we easily hang up or press delete to avoid the sales pitches, but cold calls are actually a marketing tool which can be used to great effect in the business of job hunting.\u00a0 Cold calling is helpful in building personal connections with hiring managers, finding hidden jobs which have not been advertised, creating an early contact for hiring, and making yourself stand out among a sea of applicants.\u00a0 The fear of being rejected can undoubtedly cause cold feet when cold calling to sell yourself as a valuable asset to an organization, but here a few things to help you prepare and hopefully overcome the anxiety:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Do the necessary research prior to a cold call<\/strong> to determine which individual is ultimately responsible for hiring in the department you are interested in.\u00a0 Make your inquiry with the person responsible for hiring, not just human resources or the receptionist.\u00a0 Finding hidden jobs, those ones which HR or the greater organization may not know about yet is what makes the cold call worth the effort.\u00a0 So, carefully direct your cold call.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Determine your method of contact<\/strong>.\u00a0 Today, cold calling can take the form of a telephone call, email or even social network site message.\u00a0 These methods of communication can each be successful, but again, research the organization, or person of contact, to determine which may be best.\u00a0 My preference is to start with an email, and follow up with a phone call if a response is not received within a couple of business days.\u00a0 Contacting a person through a social networking site may be preferable if you know that this person is very active in social media, or if you cannot find a direct email or phone number.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know what value you can add<\/strong>.\u00a0 Phrase the inquiry as an offer to contribute to the organization.\u00a0\u00a0 You will feel a lot more confident in your communications if you take this approach rather than simply asking what positions may be available.\u00a0 Remember, cold calls are used to make sales.\u00a0 What skills, knowledge and connections are you selling?\u00a0 Start with who you are, what you know about the organization and what you provide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider yourself a peer of your contact<\/strong>.\u00a0 Think of yourself as a business trying to make a deal with another business, rather than a telemarketer trying to sell a product to a customer.\u00a0 The recruiter is doing a favor by spending the time communicating with you, but you are also taking the time to share what you can offer.\u00a0 This can be helpful to the organization because if and when positions are available, if you are in their minds as a possible candidate, it is one less resume to sift through to find a potential hire.\u00a0 It is important to be respectful because you are asking a favor of the hiring manager, but don\u2019t be afraid to speak comfortably about yourself, the field and organization.\u00a0 Showcase your knowledge and personality when it feels appropriate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be prepared to hear, \u201cSorry, we are not hiring right now.\u201d<\/strong> Don\u2019t be discouraged.\u00a0 Really it is more likely that a position is not currently available.\u00a0 Just don\u2019t let the conversation end there.\u00a0 Focus on cultivating a relationship with your contact person.
