{"id":4989,"date":"2012-11-08T11:55:06","date_gmt":"2012-11-08T16:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4989"},"modified":"2012-11-20T17:16:42","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T22:16:42","slug":"liz-thompson-success-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4989","title":{"rendered":"Liz Thompson &#8230;Success Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My interview with success story, Liz<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/lizt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4990\" title=\"lizt\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/lizt-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 I scoured the online resources (<a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/\">INALJ<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ala.org\" target=\"_blank\">ala.org<\/a> to name but a few) weekly. \u00a0I also volunteered for as many professional events and groups as my time allowed. \u00a0I&#8217;ve heard that professional networking is crucial to finding and being offered a position, but actually I was offered the position of E-Learning Librarian at Georgia College without knowing a soul at the university or even in the state of Georgia. \u00a0Although the professional networking did not lead directly to a job offer, the process did improve my networking skills which helped prepare me for interviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 My favorite library is still and probably will always be the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.midpointelibrary.org\/\">Middletown (OH) public library<\/a>. \u00a0I grew up there, and I remember when the library moved to it&#8217;s current location. \u00a0I still refer to the current building as the &#8220;new&#8221; location even though it opened in 1982.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite book? \u00a0I<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 have never been able to pick a single favorite book. \u00a0I enjoy fiction, non-fiction, essays, and short stories. \u00a0I&#8217;ll read just about anything, and I have been in as many as three book groups at once. \u00a0I have a stack of books waiting to be read right now, in fact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 The collaborative and sharing nature of the library community is my favorite thing about libraries and library technology.\u00a0 The people that work in and around libraries are the most generous people I know.\u00a0 As a recent library school graduate, I found the library community to be welcoming and supportive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have an interest in distance, hybrid, or blended librarianship, you should check out Paul Pival&#8217;s blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/distlib.blogs.com\/distlib\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Distant Librarian<\/a>, and Jane Secker&#8217;s blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/janesecker.wordpress.com\" target=\"_blank\">Libraries, Information Literacy, and E-Learning<\/a>. I also just completed a <a href=\"http:\/\/blended.online.ucf.edu\/blendkit-course\/\" target=\"_blank\">MOOC on blended learning<\/a> conducted by Dr. Kelvin Thompson and Dr. Linda Futch at the University of Central Florida.\u00a0\u00a0This program is always available online, so even though the &#8220;live&#8221; 2012 session is over, you can still access all of the resources online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Liz:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had to learn to pace myself and focus on my career goals. Which basically means that I had to learn to be OK with only applying for job postings that were exactly what I wanted to do, and not applying for every job posting I found. \u00a0Once I had that focus, I was able to pace myself and not feel so overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Liz Thompson is the E-Learning Librarian at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gcsu.edu\/library\/index.htm\">Georgia College and State University<\/a>. She coordinates the library&#8217;s online learning initiatives and collaborates with faculty to integrate information resources into course curricula. She is the liaison to the College of Business, manages the library&#8217;s collection of business resources, and provides reference assistance and information literacy instruction to students. In the Spring 2013 semester, she will be teaching one section of the course, Research in the Age of Google.
