{"id":4848,"date":"2012-10-31T08:29:37","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T12:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4848"},"modified":"2012-11-20T16:46:44","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T21:46:44","slug":"rich-clegg-success-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4848","title":{"rendered":"Rich Clegg &#8230;Success Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My interview with success story, Rich<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/richc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4849\" title=\"richc\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/richc-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 Although I used <a href=\"..\/?p=1441\">INALJ<\/a> to apply to many positions, searching <a href=\"http:\/\/simplyhired.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">simplyhired.com<\/a> was how I found my current position. \u00a0The job description was posted in <a href=\"..\/?p=1441\">INALJ<\/a> about a day after I found it searching SimplyHired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;The Reg&#8221;&#8212; also known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.uchicago.edu\/e\/reg\/\">Joseph Regenstein Library at the University of Chicago<\/a>. \u00a0Although I was never a student there, I was lucky enough to spend many evenings working in their Mac lab while I was completing undergraduate digital art projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 I once found an older reference book that I think was called <em>The\u00a0Encyclopedia\u00a0of Hand Tools<\/em>. \u00a0I needed to find out what a bricklayer&#8217;s hammer looked like, why it&#8217;s designed the way it is, and how it&#8217;s used for brick laying. \u00a0I ended up paging through that book for a long time looking at all the crazy tools I&#8217;ve never heard of and the many uses they have&#8211;it was surprisingly fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 Student empowerment &#8212; I&#8217;m not sure if there&#8217;s a feeling in the world greater than knowing you empowered a student in some way. \u00a0Libraries are innately able to empower students just because of concepts like equal access and privacy. \u00a0These are concepts to be passionate \u00a0about and be proud to call your profession. \u00a0Empowering students with these concepts allows them to take advantage of the\u00a0opportunities\u00a0the library offers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 With the Skiing World Cup season starting up, you could compete with me on <a href=\"http:\/\/fantasyskiracer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">fantasyskiracer.com<\/a> &#8212; let&#8217;s go team USA!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Rich:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you can get into a practicum, internship, or a paraprofessional position before you graduate library school, do it. I had worked as a student reference assistant for two years before I had my practicum and I felt far more prepared to apply for full-time positions than I would have coming out of library school with less experience. \u00a0While you&#8217;re working at these types of positions&#8211;seek out the greatest opportunities for professional growth possible. \u00a0I had the opportunity to teach a couple information literacy sessions before I graduated library school. \u00a0Experiences working with course management software, creating research guides, or instruction could become part of an internship and that&#8217;s a valuable skill set to have for an interview.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rich Clegg earned his MLIS from Dominican University in River Forest, IL.\u00a0 He\u2019s currently working in distance learning roles as an online reference librarian at Career Education Corporation (CEC) and as an adjunct instructor at National-Louis University (NLU).\u00a0 At CEC, Rich is a resource coordinator for Business and Homeland Security studies.\u00a0 \u00a0At NLU, he teaches LIBR 200 &#8212; Digital Information Literacy, a course that explores research practices and promotes critical thinking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As an undergraduate at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, IL; Rich worked at the A.C. Buehler Library under a team of librarians that inspired him to apply to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dom.edu\/gslis\">library school at Dominican University<\/a>. \u00a0At Dominican, Rich worked as a student reference assistant at the Rebecca Crown Library and also had the opportunity to complete a practicum at Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL. \u00a0His graduate education and the diverse student populations he serves have instilled Rich with a teaching philosophy dedicated to truth and compassionate service.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My interview with success story, Rich Naomi:\u00a0 How did you find your current job?
