When\u00a0I found out my contract at the NTL was ending September 30, I followed up on it, and\u00a0was hired\u00a0in October\u00a0by\u00a0Phase One Consulting Group, which is the contractor on this project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Rosalyn<\/strong><strong> :<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a special place\u00a0in my heart for my first\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillsdale-library.org\/\">public library in Hillsdale<\/a>,\u00a0an\u00a0old mansion with creaky floors and\u00a0bookshelves crammed in everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Rosalyn<\/strong><strong> :<\/strong>\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t pick just one, but I have a long-term relationship with the works of\u00a0Laura Ingalls Wilder\u00a0dating back to before I could read, when I got &#8220;Little House in the Big Woods&#8221; from my grandparents for my 5th birthday. I read a lot of mysteries, from the classics like Dorothy L. Sayers to current favorites like Jacqueline Winspear and Charles Todd.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Rosalyn<\/strong><strong> :<\/strong>\u00a0 I&#8217;m just old enough to remember filing index cards in\u00a0my college library&#8217;s card catalog for\u00a0hours on end, before they had an online catalog.\u00a0 This is not a time I would like to go back to.\u00a0\u00a0Also, journal\u00a0indices in print\u00a0were a huge\u00a0time- and space-suck.\u00a0 However, my last few jobs would simply not have been possible without government\u00a0internet sites.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine having to look up everything in (out-of-date) print sources all over town, rather than just doing a few quick searches or browses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Rosalyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I get a kick out of the Love the Liberry blog: <a href=\"http:\/\/lovetheliberry.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/lovetheliberry.blogspot.com\/<\/a>.\u00a0 When I was doing reference it was a good source of . . . perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Rosalyn<\/strong><strong> :<\/strong>\u00a0 Only once have I ever gotten a job through seeing an ad in the paper and applying (although it was the best job).\u00a0 So, I&#8217;d say look into staffing agencies,\u00a0keep in touch with former colleagues, get involved in associations, make sure your technical skills are current, and\u00a0keep looking.\u00a0 Lots of people are looking for work right now, and not necessarily because they are doing something wrong.\u00a0 It&#8217;s tough out there.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rosalyn Alleman grew up in Hillsdale, MI the daughter of an academic librarian and a teacher, and she spent a lot of time in libraries, including working in a college library her senior year in high school. She also worked in a library through college, and pictured herself in a career in academic libraries. Rosalyn moved to the Washington, DC area from Virginia to get her <a href=\"http:\/\/ischool.umd.edu\/\">MLS at the University of Maryland<\/a>, and stayed around for the job opportunities (none of which were academic). \u00a0She worked in a variety libraries and information centers until 2003, when she was hired as a contractor for the National Transportation Library at the US DOT. For 9 1\/2 years she provided e-mail and telephone reference services to the transportation industry, government clients and the public. She is currently employed as a consultant in customer service to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/\">DOT\u2019s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My interview with success story, Rosalyn Naomi:\u00a0 How did you find your current job?
