My interview with success story and former INALJ Assistant Editor, Carla<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>How did you find your current job?
\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>I found the position on Glassdoor.com<\/a> when I was performing my nightly INALJ<\/strong> duties in August.\u00a0 It was listed as an intern position, but the title is librarian.<\/p>\n

Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite library you have been to?
\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>This question is just as hard now as it was a year ago.\u00a0 I made it to Denmark and saw amazing public, academic, and special library spaces.\u00a0 I still love Imaginon in Charlotte<\/a>, North Carolina also because of the interactive spaces and items for children and young adults.\u00a0 Pictured is the outside of a great public library in Copenhagen<\/a> that opened in 2011 as well as pictures of the children\u2019s and teen rooms.<\/p>\n

Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite book?\u00a0 <\/strong>
\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>I will shine the spotlight on some of my favorite books that I’ve read in the last year to make it easier on me.\u00a0 Copper Sun<\/em> by Sharon Draper, Douglass\u2019 Women<\/em> by Jewell Parker\"\"<\/a> Rhodes, The Secrets of Mary Bowser<\/em> by Lois Leveen, Family Tree<\/em> by Barbara Delinsky, Celeste\u2019s Harlem Renaissance<\/em> by Eleanora Tate, and When Washington Was in Vogue:\u00a0 A Love Story <\/em>by Edward Christopher Williams.\u00a0 Edward Christopher Williams was the first professional African American librarian from my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.\u00a0 He wrote this novel during the Harlem Renaissance and it was discovered several years ago under the name of Davy Carr.<\/p>\n

Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?
\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>Since I started library science school last fall, I have come to love the many cool Facebook and Pinterest pages that are out there celebrating libraries, librarians, information, books, bookworms, and all other related items.\u00a0 It is amazing and wonderful to see libraries and librarians celebrated in social media spaces.<\/p>\n

\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>Little Known Black Librarian Facts<\/a>, \u00a0LISNews<\/a>, and Hiring Librarians<\/a>. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Best piece of job hunting advice?
\nCarla:\u00a0 <\/strong>Apply to the positions that have meaning to you and will fulfill you as a person and a librarian.\u00a0 Take your time writing that resume and cover letter.\u00a0 Sell yourself as the only person who can do that job.\u00a0 Match the requirements word for word in your resume and highlight those requirements in the cover letter.<\/p>\n

(from 10\/19\/2012) In the final weeks of her Master of Library Science program at<\/em>\"\"<\/a> North Carolina Central University, Carla Sarratt is thrilled to have a job before she puts on her cap and gown in December.\u00a0 In addition to her new librarian job, she still interns at the State<\/em> Library of North Carolina\u2019s Government and Heritage Library.\u00a0 This semester she combined her new first love Pinterest with a project for her Special Library class to create a Pinterest page for the Government and Heritage Library<\/a>.\u00a0 Carla was previously interviewed for our In Six<\/a> series.<\/em><\/p>\n
