{"id":4535,"date":"2012-10-12T09:24:36","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T13:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4535"},"modified":"2012-11-19T17:28:07","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T22:28:07","slug":"erin-wenz-in-six","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4535","title":{"rendered":"Erin Wenz &#8230;In Six"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My interview with INALJ volunteer and success story, Erin<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/erinw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4537\" title=\"erinw\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/erinw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have been lucky to work with the wonderful people at my current employer for the past few years.\u00a0 When a\u00a0professional librarian position opened up, I jumped at the chance to apply.\u00a0 Of course, the position was advertised in several places (including <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=1441\">INALJ<\/a>) and several other candidates applied.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u00a0have enjoyed a number of libraries, but I think my\u00a0favorites have been my hometown public library (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochesterpubliclibrary.org\/\">Rochester Public Library in MN<\/a>) because of all of the memories I have from my childhood,\u00a0the cozy library at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelock.edu\/library\/\">Wheelock College<\/a> that had so many of the books I used for\u00a0my classes\u00a0at Simmons College, and the Newton Public Library for its wide-ranging, but\u00a0unintimidating collection.\u00a0 I am leaving so many good libraries off this list!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 My favorite book changes regularly.\u00a0 One of the last books that\u00a0I fell in love\u00a0with is Frances Itani&#8217;s <em>Remembering the Bones<\/em>.\u00a0 I rewarded myself\u00a0after a busy\u00a0time by\u00a0exploring a\u00a0small, local book-and-music\u00a0store housed in\u00a0a restaurant (brilliant!).\u00a0 This book caught my eye and fully lived up to its promise!\u00a0 I would recommend it\u00a0in particular to those who\u00a0enjoyed <em>To the Lighthouse\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0like\u00a0episodic novels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love the relationships that are formed\u00a0through the library.\u00a0 Librarians form connections with users in so many ways and encourage them to return.\u00a0 Users interact with one\u00a0another through programs or through collaborative projects.\u00a0 Library materials and resources connect individuals\u00a0to\u00a0real and imagined others\u00a0across the globe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 For library-related searches, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org\/\">In the Library with the Lead Pipe<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infodocket.com\/\">InfoDocket<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schoollibraryjournal.com\/neverendingsearch\">NeverEndingSearch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.code4lib.org\/\">The Code4Lib Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com\/\">Teen Librarian Toolbox<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissarmylibrarian.net\/\">Swiss Army Librarian<\/a> are good.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webjunction.org\/\">WebJunction<\/a> is a wonderful resource as well.\u00a0 If advertisements do not bother you, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freetech4teachers.com\/\">Free Technology for Teachers<\/a> is a good resource.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katheats.com\/\">Kath Eats Real Food<\/a> is a fun non-library resource.\u00a0 I just found the exciting news that <a href=\"http:\/\/yearof52adventures.com\/\">The Year of 52 Adventures<\/a> is still going.\u00a0 I also enjoy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatchareadingnow.com\/\">Whatcha&#8217; Reading Now?<\/a>, though it sadly has not been updated in a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Erin:<\/strong>\u00a0 The best advice I can share is to be willing to experiment.\u00a0 Work on projects that take you outside of your comfort zone.\u00a0 Volunteer in a variety of places.\u00a0 Apply for positions that may not be what you originally imagined yourself doing<\/p>\n<p><em>Erin, a former mid-Westerner, recently became the Electronic Resources Librarian at a small, but growing academic institution on the East Coast. She loves helping people and seeing them get excited by new ideas, tools, or entertainment options. Working in libraries and attending library school have been eye-opening for her. Who knew so much went on behind the scenes! Ultimately, she wants to end up in a professional position in a public library.
