{"id":44941,"date":"2013-10-21T06:07:20","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T10:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=44941"},"modified":"2014-04-29T14:39:40","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T19:39:40","slug":"matching-needs-with-wants-or-how-job-hunting-makes-sense-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=44941","title":{"rendered":"Matching Needs with Wants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Matching Needs with Wants: or how job hunting makes sense to me<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>by <a title=\"Naomi House, MLIS \u2013 r\u00e9sum\u00e9\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=3853\">Naomi House, MLIS<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/naomi-house-cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-42373 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/naomi-house-cropped-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"naomi house cropped\" width=\"240\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/naomi-house-cropped-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/naomi-house-cropped.jpg 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>We all need to work to pay the bills, or at least most of us do.\u00a0 We do not think to apply to every single job out there because we (as info pros) have degrees (MLS, MLIS) and skillsets that make us good at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">specific<\/span> things.\u00a0 What we have going for us is that our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">need<\/span> for a job coupled with our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">want<\/span> to have a job that applies our skillsets means our needs and wants support each other.\u00a0 We have the dream scenario- we know what we want to do and people will pay us to do it (once we find the job)!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I know it isn&#8217;t as easy as that- finding a job can be very hard for numerous reasons (lack of job openings, location issues, interviewing skills issues, and problems outside your control).\u00a0 But what I am reminding myself is that at least we have a passion that we can get paid to do.\u00a0 That does not mean that the job we dream about is the one we will be hired to do or even that that job will truly be our dream job.\u00a0 If you want to be an info pro or librarian to only work in one type of environment then you are in it for the wrong reasons.\u00a0 If you daydream of gorgeous old wood and musty old books surrounding you then you are too engrossed in atmosphere\/ fantasy and not in the work.\u00a0 Information science is about the work, and the work is what should inspire you.\u00a0 That will come through in your interviews as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I highly recommend looking beyond the library jobs at jobs in fields that utilize our skillsets.\u00a0 We have more opportunities than just the &#8220;L&#8221;
