{"id":4370,"date":"2012-10-03T08:26:02","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T12:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4370"},"modified":"2012-11-19T16:22:01","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T21:22:01","slug":"robin-rockman-in-six","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4370","title":{"rendered":"Robin Rockman &#8230;In Six"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My interview with success story and INALJ volunteer, Robin!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/robinr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4371\" title=\"robinr\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/robinr-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccls.org\/buckles\/jobs.shtml\">BCCLS<\/a>, which is a large consortium in New Jersey of mostly northern NJ libraries has a great and very active Jobs board. \u00a0I would say 90% of the jobs I applied to and interviewed with were through their jobs board.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong>I have yet to meet a library that I didn&#8217;t love. \u00a0Even one-room converted trailers are beautiful to me! \u00a0I interned at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonappetit.com\/\">Bon Appetit Magazine<\/a> and, for a foodie, found their library to be heaven. \u00a0Surrounded by cookbooks and food writing all day? \u00a0Yes, please! \u00a0I am also really partial to the Junior Room at the <a href=\"http:\/\/oradell.bccls.org\/\">Oradell Free Public Library<\/a>, where I work. \u00a0It&#8217;s large and spacious with so many little areas for people to play or cozy up with books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, where do I begin? <em>The Time Traveler&#8217;s Wife<\/em> by Audrey Niffeneger is probably the only book I have read twice as an adult because I loved it so much the first time (not including some of the Harry Potter books, which are in a category all to themselves). \u00a0<em>The Elephant &amp; Piggie<\/em> books by Mo Willems and <em>Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type<\/em> by Doreen Cronin are some of those rare children books where I was probably laughing harder than the kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Favorite thing about libraries\/library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong>Libraries: It&#8217;s a huge room or building of books!!! \u00a0And it&#8217;s free to borrow!! \u00a0Libraries have always been my place to go when I feel like I am in a rut. \u00a0It&#8217;s like, what do I want to learn more about today or where do I want to go? \u00a0Books take me there and I come out of the library feeling energized and infinitely better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/opencoverletters.com\/\">Open Cover Letters<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hiringlibrarians.com\/\">Hiring Librarians<\/a> were probably the most helpful during the job search process with an insider\u2019s point of view on how to present myself. \u00a0There are tons of great bloggers that regularly blog about the storytimes they create and that has been extremely instrumental as I plan and prepare storytime for the kids. \u00a0This is a good page to start with:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/?page_id=519\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/?page_id=519<\/a>. \u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/ALAthinkTANK\">ALA Think Tank<\/a> group on Facebook has also been instrumental in keeping me up to date on issues in the library community, as well as programming ideas and situations I am likely to encounter with the day to day stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:\u00a0 <\/strong>Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Robin:\u00a0 <\/strong>Whatever makes you the most uncomfortable, whatever your weakness is&#8230; \u00a0work on that. \u00a0Volunteer, talk to people, confront criticism&#8230;push your boundaries, as it is the only way you will grow and learn. \u00a0Oh- and I found it really helpful to write each cover letter from scratch to ensure that it was personal and specific to the job. \u00a0It was a LOT of work, but I had a pretty high rate of calls for interviews so I think the hard work really does pay off.<\/p>\n<p><em>I am a corporate refugee, having spend 10 years in the music industry, most notably as the Advertising Director for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmg.com\/\">Warner Music Group<\/a>, and another 2 years at a small advertising agency where I primarily focused on reaching parents, moms-to-be, and children. \u00a0I received my MLIS from <a href=\"http:\/\/comminfo.rutgers.edu\/master-of-library-and-information-science\/program-information.html#.UGsn7_Lhfn8\">Rutgers<\/a> in early 2012 and am now the Youth Services Librarian at the <a href=\"http:\/\/oradell.bccls.org\/\">Oradell Free Public Library<\/a> in Oradell, NJ. \u00a0I also fill in on the reference desk at another library that I interviewed with, but didn&#8217;t get the job. \u00a0It just goes to show that you never know how things will work out. \u00a0I enjoy reading, exercising, and cooking. \u00a0Although my current obsession is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemswithfriends.com\/\">Gems with Friends<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My interview with success story and INALJ volunteer, Robin!
