{"id":4299,"date":"2012-09-28T08:28:59","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T12:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4299"},"modified":"2012-11-19T16:03:31","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T21:03:31","slug":"ashley-stevens-in-six","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=4299","title":{"rendered":"Ashley Stevens &#8230;In Six"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My interview with success story,\u00a0 Ashley<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ashleys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4302\" title=\"ashleys\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ashleys-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 I found my position through <a href=\"http:\/\/archivesgig.livejournal.com\/\">Archives Gig<\/a> which then redirected me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usajobs.gov\/\">USAjobs.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spl.org\/\">The Seattle Public Library<\/a>.\u00a0 I love the architectural design of the building, their use of library-related objects as art, and the red floor.\u00a0 They have an entire floor painted the color red which incidentally is my favorite color.\u00a0 I loved it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>The Count of Monte Cristo<\/em> by Alexandre Dumas.\u00a0 A couple of years ago, I went on this classics kick.\u00a0 I wanted to read all the classics that I never got a chance to read in school.\u00a0 I came across this book and fell in love.\u00a0 It has murder, intrigue, love, revenge and so much more.\u00a0 Dumas keeps you entertained and makes you think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like the openness and inviting nature of libraries and librarians. It\u2019s my hope to bring that to the archives profession.\u00a0 I think as a profession we tend to hold people at a distance but I don\u2019t think that should be the case.\u00a0 I love what I do and I love history.\u00a0 I want to help others understand that and should they become a fan of archives that\u2019s great too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 For job-related sites, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/archivesgig.livejournal.com\/\">Archives Gig<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hiringlibrarians.com\/\">Hiring Librarians<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/opencoverletters.com\/\">OpenCoverLetters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For fun, I love following anything on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nerdist.com\/\">The Nerdist<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s tailored to all the nerds out there, like me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Ashley:<\/strong>\u00a0 My best friend gave me advice that\u2019s always stuck with me in my job search.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to experiment.\u00a0 Change things up.\u00a0 For example, during my college years, I was a journalist on the college paper.\u00a0 In journalism, you\u2019re taught never to bury the lead in the story.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to grab the reader\u2019s attention from the first sentence.\u00a0 I took those skill sets and applied them to my cover letters.\u00a0 And, I started getting interviews.\u00a0 Even though I didn\u2019t get those jobs, I was getting a call back.\u00a0 I realized that I was doing something that got me noticed out of the hundreds of applications.<\/p>\n<p>Try something different with your cover letter and resume.\u00a0 You never know, it could be the very thing that gets you noticed\u2026.and the job.<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m a southerner without a southern accent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I was born and raised in Brunswick, Georgia.\u00a0 I got my B.A. in History at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiasouthern.edu\/\">Georgia Southern University<\/a> in 2007.\u00a0 After taking a year off, I went on to graduate from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libsci.sc.edu\/program\/masters.html\">University of South Carolina<\/a> with my M.A. in Public History and an M.L.I.S. with an archives concentration.\u00a0 At USC, I got a chance to work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingushistory.org\/\">Teaching American History in South Carolina<\/a>, which inspired me to become a people\u2019s archivist.\u00a0 Also, I interned for a summer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/pacific-alaska\/seattle\/\">National Archives in Seattle<\/a>.\u00a0 After graduating in 2011, I worked for a year as a contract archives technician in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/deva\/index.htm\">Death Valley National Park<\/a>.\u00a0 Starting in late October, I will be joining the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/midatlantic\/\">National Archives in Philadelphia<\/a> as an archives technician.
