But times have changed and it&#8217;s a whole new world out there. Early in my career it felt like I was headed upward yet in the past few years I&#8217;ve made some lateral, downwards, sideways and upward moves. How about you?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently I listened to a talk by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of \u201cLean In\u201d to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2Db0_RafutM\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Harvard Business School Class of 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">I thought her advice to the graduating class was spot on and applies to anyone seeking employment and managing a\u00a0career.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of her key points were (emphasis on last 3 points is mine)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; color: #000000;\">Look for opportunities<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Look for growth<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Look for mission<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Move sideways<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Move down<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Move on<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Move off<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Build your skills, not your resume<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Evaluate what you can do, not the title they are going to give you<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Do real work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Don&#8217;t plan too much<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Don&#8217;t expect a direct climb<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Move from command and control to listening and guiding<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">You won&#8217;t be able to rely on who you are or the degree you hold, you will have to rely on what you know<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Your strength will not come from a place on a org chart, it will come by earning trust and building respect<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Communicate authentically<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I highly recommend watching\/listening to the entire address, it\u2019s less than 23 minutes.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the beginning, Sheryl talks about how after she went to work at Facebook an acquaintance and former HBS graduate named Lori Goler\u00a0called her to discuss joining her at Facebook. Lori thought about how she should approach Sheryl, how she thought about telling her all the things she is good at, all the things she likes to do, but she figured everyone was doing that. So instead she asked Sheryl &#8220;what is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it&#8221;? Sheryl had never heard anything like that from the thousands of people she had hired (she had never even said that).
