What Do You Do When You Can\u2019t Relocate For a Job?<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"RebekahKati\"<\/a>The most frequent piece of advice that I was given in library school was that I would need to relocate to find a job.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ll likely have to move to a place where you won\u2019t want to stay very long\u201d, these well-meaning people would say.\u00a0 While the ability to relocate certainly makes a job search easier, sometimes it is not always feasible to move.\u00a0 So what do you do when you are tied to a specific place and need a library job?<\/p>\n

First, make sure that you check local job listings. <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes jobs are only posted on a company\u2019s webpage or a handful of other places.\u00a0 These listings can be easily overlooked by job aggregators.\u00a0 Make sure that you check these sites frequently for new postings or set up alerts.\u00a0 It may take some time, but you\u2019ll know that your search is comprehensive.\u00a0 Plus, you can tailor your search to your specific skill set.<\/p>\n

Also, think outside the box <\/b>when searching for jobs.\u00a0 This is especially important if you live in a town with few libraries.\u00a0 Library and information science skills are easily transferable to other fields, such as knowledge management, database design and web development.\u00a0 Be creative!\u00a0 When in doubt, check out the \u201cKeywords for Job Searching\u201d box in the left sidebar of INALJ.com<\/a>.\u00a0 Don\u2019t overlook a job because it does not have the word \u201clibrarian\u201d in the title.<\/p>\n

Third, be realistic and honest when assessing jobs<\/b>.\u00a0 It is very easy to feel like you need to take any job you can get, but jobs can come with tradeoffs that should be evaluated.\u00a0 Is a long commute feasible for your schedule?\u00a0 Does a pay cut fit with your budget?<\/p>\n

Keep your skills sharp.\u00a0 <\/b>There are many free or low cost professional development tools out there which can help you maintain the skills that you learned in library school or develop new ones as you search for a job.\u00a0 My fellow Head Editors have recommended a number of opportunities, including MOOCs<\/a>, webinars<\/a>, and conferences<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finally, network!\u00a0 <\/b>Join your state or local library association to get to know librarians in your area.\u00a0 Some library associations will host networking events that will serve this purpose.\u00a0 You may also want to volunteer or pursue an internship at a local library so that other librarians will become familiar with you and your work.<\/p>\n

Your job search will likely be long and tough, but eventually you will find the perfect job for you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t give up!<\/p>\n
