When an opening came up, I applied. I have to say that even though it was expensive, I did offer to fly out from Seattle to interview. I think that&#8217;s what got me this job!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi: <\/strong>Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Shannon: <\/strong>My favorite library is the downtown branch of the Juneau Public Library in Alaska. It&#8217;s on top of a parking garage, which I think is a genius use of space!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi: <\/strong>Favorite book?<br \/>\n<strong>Shannon: <\/strong>Keeping in mind that I&#8217;m a children&#8217;s librarian, the book(s) that I read again and again are the <em>Chronicles of Narnia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi: <\/strong>Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<strong>Shannon: <\/strong>My favorite thing about libraries is that I truly believe they are the last pure democratic institutions in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi: <\/strong>Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Shannon: <\/strong>The website I use the most as a public librarian is: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopyourekillingme.com\/\">www.stopyourekillingme.com<\/a>. It&#8217;s a mysteries website that allows you to search by author, character, and location, and lists series in order. I wouldn&#8217;t be able to help my patrons half so well or efficiently without it, plus I use it a ton for myself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi: <\/strong>Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Shannon: <\/strong>No matter what kind of library job you are applying for, make sure you know exactly who your patrons will be. For example, if you&#8217;re applying for a public library job, use the new census website to find out the demographics. If you are applying for a special libraries job, find out exactly who your patrons will be. Use that information to frame the answers to the interview questions very specifically.<\/p>\n<p><em>I have a been a children&#8217;s librarian for 11 years. I have always worked for big library systems and decided I needed a change! In looking for a single library, I discovered that New England is the place to be.
