What is a Library?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/527926_759573701450_305419315_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14309 alignleft\" alt=\"527926_759573701450_305419315_n\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/527926_759573701450_305419315_n-218x300.jpg\" width=\"153\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>This month, I am participating in the<a href=\"http:\/\/ischool.syr.edu\/future\/grad\/newlibopencourse.aspx\"> Syracuse University iSchool\u2019s New Librarianship Master Class<\/a>. I\u2019m just finishing up the first week of classes, which will set the precedent for the rest of the course. We\u2019re working off of a basic mission statement &#8211; The mission of librarians is to improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities &#8211; and breaking it down as it applies to what our instructor, <a href=\"http:\/\/quartz.syr.edu\/blog\/?page_id=27\">R. David Lankes<\/a> (Syracuse iSchool Professor and Dean\u2019s Scholar for the New Librarianship) considers \u201cnew librarianship\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">First, what is new librarianship? \u00a0This concept focuses on libraries as a place for conversation, not a place for collections. \u00a0The librarian is the creator of the library, not its employee &#8211; we have the power to facilitate conversation and create knowledge, not just hand you the tools to find that knowledge. \u00a0And the librarians are not just the creators of that knowledge &#8211; the community that uses the library (i.e. patrons), also has a role in creating that knowledge. \u00a0\u00a0This view of libraries takes them away from the place of just stacks and into a true community resources.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In reviewing the first week of classes, three thoughts come to mind.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/12\/public-advocate-questions-library-plan-to-renovate-fifth-avenue-branch\/\">The recent plans by the New York Public Library to renovate its iconic Fifth Avenue branch to remove the research stacks<\/a>. \u00a0These plans are now on hold, and in the view of new librarianship, putting them on hold is a bad thing. The New York Public Library is attempting to make their iconic space a place of conversation (and on the side, remove the oft-believed misconception that you can just walk in to that building with the lions and check out a book) and not just some building of books. It wants to be a place of social engagement, not just a place where you can \u201cread these books and thus improve society.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019m disappointed in this decision and hope that the library and its stakeholders reconsider, because it is truly for the good of the library and the City.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Makerspace Movement in libraries. \u00a0Many libraries &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitpubliclibrary.org\/hype\/hype-makerspace\">Detroit Public Library<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/teens.chattlibrary.org\/\">Chattanooga (TN) Public Librar<\/a>y among them &#8211; made their teen spaces Makerspaces, where patrons can experiment with creation of electronics, 3D printings, and crafts. \u00a0\u00a0This is new librarianship at its finest. \u00a0These places allow teens to \u201cunleash their brilliance on the rest of the world\u201d and be a part of the library. \u00a0\u00a0My partner and I tend to disagree on the role of the makerspace in the library (I\u2019m all for it, he\u2019s all against it), but I\u2019m hoping that he can see the benefit of the makerspace through the lens of new librarianship.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">INALJ. \u00a0Take a look at some of the keywords we use for job searching (on our main page): Information Architect, Knowledge Architect, Database Designer, User Interface Designer. \u00a0These are just a few of the titles that fit into New Librarianship &#8211; the librarian as creator of the library, the creator of the knowledge. \u00a0There aren\u2019t many of these titles right now, but I expect them to increase as New Librarianship takes hold.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m hoping to write further on the course on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.katekosturski.info\">my personal blog<\/a>, but I hope this taste of new librarianship encourages you to change your thinking (or perhaps even sign up for the course yourself!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Kate Kosturski, Head Editor, INALJ New York State New Librarianship Master Class: What IS a Librarian?
