Naomi House\u2019s interview with success story and INALJ California<\/a> Assistant Editor, Matthew.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"mattk\"<\/a>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 How did you find your current job?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 I had friends from library school looking out for me, and one that was in-the-know told me about a position that would be opening soon. \u00a0She forwarded the posting to me the next day, and I applied as quickly as humanly possible.<\/p>\n

Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 Technically not a library (though it does have a reading room, so I’m counting it), but the Culture House in Reykjavik, Iceland<\/a>, holds a special place in my heart. \u00a0Seeing some of the old, original sagas perfectly preserved and on display there kickstarted my interest in archives, which led me to enroll in library school in the first place. \u00a0I was taking my first classes within the year.<\/p>\n

Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite book?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 Watership Down<\/em> by Richard Adams–it’s a hopeful, sad, and often horrifying book about bunnies. \u00a0It destroys me every time.<\/p>\n

Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 With my position, I’ll be the one who gets to introduce public library staff and administration to new technological concepts as they become available, and I love the idea that I’m helping them (and by extension, all their patrons) become better prepared for the future. \u00a0It’s an incredibly rewarding feeling.<\/p>\n

Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 The OA Tracking Project (@oatp<\/a>) is a great way to stay up-to-date on Open Access-related projects around the world. \u00a0Of course, Cory Doctorow (@doctorow<\/a>) and boingboing.net<\/a> are great for intellectual freedom and other fun topics.<\/p>\n

Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?
\nMatthew:<\/b>\u00a0 If you’re still in library school, make friends and keep in touch. \u00a0They are your best and most easily acquired resource.\u00a0\u00a0You never know what doors they’ll be able to open for you in the future. \u00a0Also, when you’re all job hunting at the same time, they can provide an excellent support group.<\/p>\n

Matthew Kirby is the assistant director of the Falling Water River Regional Library, a division of the Tennessee State Library & Archives.\u00a0 He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee \u2013 Knoxville\u2019s School of Information Sciences.\u00a0 In his spare time, he volunteers as an assistant on INALJ\u2019s California page, trains for marathons, and serves as a founding board member of a local private school.\u00a0 He also has a near-encyclopedic knowledge of superheroes that he hopes will one day become useful.\u00a0 He and his wife are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child, a daughter, this fall.<\/i><\/p>\n
