Can I Put That On My Resume?<\/b><\/p>\n

\"shelleym1\"<\/a>It\u2019s been a long time since I have had an actual “job.”\u00a0\u00a0 And by \u201cjob\u201d I mean – a reoccurring time of work that is accompanied by a salary which is paid in money<\/strong> (as opposed to macaroni art and sticky-faced kisses).\u00a0 Yes, I have spent the last 14 years raising a family.\u00a0 I chose to put my career on hold.<\/p>\n

And now that I am thinking of rejoining the workforce soon, I am feeling the disadvantages of my long hiatus.\u00a0\u00a0 You know that place on an application where employers typically want you to list your jobs in the last 10 years?\u00a0 Well, I have a goose egg, a big fat zero, jobs to list.\u00a0 So what do I put on my resume?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI have extensive experience vacuuming and can operate vacuums of all types, including canister, stick vacs, and uprights.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 I don’t think so.<\/p>\n

That is one of the reasons I chose to volunteer with INALJ.\u00a0 To get some recent, relevant experience.\u00a0 It has been a great way to do some pre-job searching networking and to get back up-to-date on the wonderful world of the librarian.\u00a0 But, as I think back on my years of motherhood I have begun to see how childrearing has given me some great skills that are clearly applicable to a library job.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 I have learned how to define my role as an authority figure.<\/strong>\u00a0 I am \u201cthe boss.”\u00a0 We can play and have fun, but at the end of the day I am their mother (aka boss), not their friend.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 I have no problem setting rules and boundaries.\u00a0<\/strong> And<\/i> standing by them.\u00a0 Even in the face of a zealous, majority opposition.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 I have held story time almost daily for over a decade.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Neither temper tantrums nor bodily fluids faze me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 I can successfully manage the schedules<\/strong> of 4 active children, 1 cat, 1 husband, and myself.\u00a0 A logistics feat worthy of a general.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0 I have helped with every type of homework assignment<\/strong> and project imaginable.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0<\/strong> With careful and clever questioning, I can discern a person’s true wants and needs based upon the most flimsy or bizarre request.<\/strong><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0 I know how to reach out to the community.\u00a0<\/strong> I am the community.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0 I can work with, and am comfortable with, children of all ages.<\/strong><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0<\/strong> With perseverance and determination, I can find just about any lost item.\u00a0<\/strong> In fact, nothing is really lost unless I can’t find it.<\/p>\n

So even though I have not had a \u201cjob.\u201d\u00a0 I have<\/i> been working.\u00a0 And my skill set and composure have grown accordingly.\u00a0 All of which will only stand me in good stead when I rejoin the workforce.\u00a0 So all I need to know now is, can I put all of that on my resume?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
