New Trends in Information & Reference Services: Speaking at the American University in the Emirates, MLIS Program
\nFeb. 15, 2013<\/span><\/h3>\n

It was my ple\"AUE<\/a>asure to give a presentation entitled, New Trends in Information and Reference Services<\/em>, at the American University in the Emirates<\/strong> <\/a>on February 15th, 2013.\u00a0 The program is the first library school program in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).\u00a0 It was my distinct honor to meet and discuss not only this topic, but other topics such as INALJ and different careers opening up to MLIS students, with the faculty and many of the students, who are members of what will be the first graduating class.<\/p>\n

I was put in touch with Professor Jassim Jirjees, Ph. D<\/a>, who founded the program and is coincidentally, a fellow Rutgers<\/a> grad, by the Special Libraries <\/a>Association, Arabian Gulf Chapter<\/a>.\u00a0 He has had a remarkable career and it was \"AUE<\/a>fascinating to be able to meet with him and discuss how the field has changed as well as our alma mater, Rutgers.\u00a0 He has worked in Baghdad previously and founded another Library School program in Yemen.\u00a0 He is a well published author<\/a> of many books and journal articles as well.<\/p>\n

I work, in my non-INLAJ life, as a reference, marketing and acquisitions librarian for a federal government contractor (meaning I work at a federal library).\u00a0 One of my key presentation points was about sharing information and building an international community of librarians.\u00a0 I encouraged those assembled to Join the Conversation:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022Librarians are global<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u2022We are more<\/strong> than just\u00a0 \u2018librarians\u2019<\/div>\n
\u2022There is so much online<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u2022You can volunteer<\/strong> virtually<\/div>\n
\u2022Read up on what others are doing globally<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u2022And contribute to the conversation- publish and present!<\/strong><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The biggest trends in reference<\/strong> that I have noticed are changed expectations, \"AUE<\/a>technologies, communities, roles and titles\/names of information pros.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I briefly touched on the following and it lead to some great questions from the students in the question and answer part of the presentation.<\/div>\n

\u2022New Expectations<\/strong> \u2013 Free, Full-text, Online<\/div>\n
\u2022New Technologies<\/strong> \u2013 Mobile; Platforms; Systems<\/div>\n
\u2022New Communities<\/strong> \u2013 Of practice; Online<\/div>\n
\u2022New Roles<\/strong> \u2013 Who works in a library?\u00a0 What about Google?<\/div>\n
\u2022New Names<\/strong> \u2013 Informationist, Knowledge Manager, etc<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One of my favorite topics to speak on is competitive intelligence.<\/strong>\u00a0 Many years back I attended a session with Sabrina Pacifici of the fabulous blog, LLRX.com<\/a>, on competitive intelligence.\u00a0 I see this as being a growth field for \"AUE<\/a>MLS\/MLIS candidates and so I shared with the students and faculty Sabrina’s Competitive Intelligence – A Selective Resource Guide<\/em><\/a> and Got Competitive Intelligence<\/em> <\/a>presentation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This also lead to some discussion about job titles that librarians can now be known by and my Keywords on the left sidebar on my website, INALJ.com<\/a>.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was lucky enough to have time to speak with students and faculty individually after the presentation.\u00a0 Many are already working in libraries and see the profound benefit that this additional education will bring to their libraries and career goals.\u00a0 The faculty are involved in some cutting edge research and are highly motivated to introduce their students to not only the academic world of library science but also the practical world.<\/div>\n

\"AUE<\/a>I am hoping to return soon<\/strong> and be able to take in a lecture or presentation at the American University in the Emirates.\u00a0 Perhaps by that time I will learn the art of balancing tea in a glass cup with no handles.\u00a0 Several students realized quickly that this was not a skill I had yet acquired and made me a make-ship sleeve for my cup.\u00a0 I follow the university and program now on LinkedIn and I look forward to hearing about the new innovations that this first class of UAE MLIS students put in place and watching their careers develop.<\/div>\n
