{"id":14211,"date":"2013-03-29T13:00:30","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T17:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=14211"},"modified":"2013-05-27T13:17:24","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T17:17:24","slug":"gaming-your-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=14211","title":{"rendered":"Gaming @ Your Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Shelley Macon, Head Editor, <a title=\"INALJ Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=5680\" target=\"_blank\">INALJ Florida<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gaming @ Your Library<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/shelleym11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11048 alignleft\" alt=\"shelleym1\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/shelleym11.jpg\" width=\"132\" height=\"106\" \/><\/a>There are many diverse (and often heated) opinions on whether video games belong in libraries or library collections. \u00a0Are they library-worthy digital media? \u00a0Are there benefits to playing video games in terms of social issues and their educational value (including their link to literacy)?\u00a0 Regardless of your view on this topic or these questions, games and gaming draw people to libraries. \u00a0The results of the International Games Days and other library gaming initiatives, clearly show that people, not just children and young adults, will come to libraries for gaming. \u00a0So why wait for an annual event to bring gaming to your library? <strong>\u00a0It is something libraries can offer year-round.<\/strong> \u00a0The ALA wiki even states that:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaming services<\/strong> epitomize library as third place, creating a community gathering spot between home and work\/school. That third place encourages play, socialization, and cultural enrichment. Libraries looking for ways to reach beyond their traditional patron base are turning to gaming.<\/p>\n<p>Board games, card games, and videogames are, in essence, information, and the human act of telling stories, presented in new formats that involve the player.
