{"id":13051,"date":"2013-03-14T08:30:58","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T12:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=13051"},"modified":"2019-01-13T20:14:26","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T02:14:26","slug":"kristen-hallows-success-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=13051","title":{"rendered":"Kristen Hallows &#8230;Success Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfc29;\">This interview is over 1 year old and may no longer be up to date or reflect the interviewee\/interviewees&#8217; positions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All <b>Jobs<\/b> for INALJ can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=1441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=1441<\/a> Updated daily<br \/>\n<em>Naomi House\u2019s interview with success story Kristen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/kristenh1-e1363036502269.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13060\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/kristenh1-e1363036502269.jpg\" alt=\"kristenh\" width=\"140\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><\/b><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 How did you find your current job?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 I found this position through a combination of two-thirds prayer and one-third unintentional networking. \u00a0As a graduate intern, I was involved in a planning committee comprised of research librarians from various area law firms. \u00a0Months after the event, one of the law librarians mentioned my name when a former supervisor asked her to recommend someone for an open position.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 My favorite has to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Public Library<\/a>. \u00a0Different parts offer the venerability of a museum, the academic ambience of a major university, and the public service orientation of a public library.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 Among my favorites are <i>One Drop<\/i> by Bliss Broyard, <i>Mad in America<\/i> by Robert Whitaker, and <i>The State Boys Rebellion<\/i> by Michael D&#8217;Antonio. \u00a0Each book tells the true stories of individuals whose lives were profoundly impacted by changing societal attitudes and major events in American history.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 Libraries are such bastions of learning and exploration. \u00a0I cannot imagine life without them. \u00a0I especially appreciate the ability to access library databases remotely.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 I really enjoy my subscription to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beSpacific.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beSpacific.com<\/a>. \u00a0It focuses on law and technology news, but you&#8217;ll also find many other topics such as government, education, and health.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<b>Kristen:<\/b>\u00a0 Treat everyone you meet as a potential member of your network. \u00a0Never try to be anything more or less than yourself, but I think it&#8217;s important to remember that you never know whose help you will need one day (solicited or unsolicited). \u00a0Librarianship is such a small field, and law librarianship is even smaller; law librarians tend to know each other. \u00a0Admittedly, the word &#8220;networking&#8221; usually makes me cringe; however, as you can see, my story does not involve networking events or any effort that felt forced or unnatural.<\/p>\n<p><i>Kristen Hallows is Research Librarian with Bricker &amp; Eckler LLP in Columbus, Ohio. \u00a0She received her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.edu\/slis\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLIS from Kent State University<\/a> in December 2012. \u00a0She holds a BS magna cum laude in Business Administration from Franklin University. \u00a0Kristen is an accomplished genealogist who also enjoys following the work of urban explorers who capture the secrets still held by abandoned state hospitals. \u00a0Follow her on Twitter @kristenhallows and look for her article, &#8220;Health Information Literacy and the Elderly: Has the Internet Had an Impact?&#8221; in an upcoming issue of The Serials Librarian.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This interview is over 1 year old and may no longer be up to date or reflect the interviewee\/interviewees&#8217; positions All Jobs for INALJ can be found here: https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=1441 Updated daily Naomi House\u2019s interview with success story Kristen.
