My on-call position at Beaverton Public library was from a daily email alert I had set up for \u201cLibrary Jobs\u201d in Portland, Oregon from <a href=\"simplyhired.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simplyhired.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<b>Brent:<\/b>\u00a0 It\u2019s a tie between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.washington.edu\/suzzallo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suzzallo at UW<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clementinum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Klementinum library in Prague<\/a>. They\u2019re both knockouts.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite book?<br \/>\n<b>Brent:<\/b>\u00a0 <em>Journey to the End of the Nigh<\/em>t by Louis-Ferdinand C\u00e9line.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Favorite thing about libraries\/ library technology?<br \/>\n<b>Brent:<\/b>\u00a0 The best thing about working in a technical role in a library is that your job role is always changing along with the technology. You could be teaching, troubleshooting or learning the ropes of a new system. It\u2019s refreshing to see so many libraries figuring out a positive way to incorporate technology so that it benefits both patrons and staff.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?<br \/>\n<b>Brent:<\/b>\u00a0 Cindy Romaine\u2019s Twitter is always a good source of trends (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CindyARomaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@CindyARomaine<\/a>), I also like Joe Kraus (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jokrausdu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@jokrausdu<\/a>). And of course, the <a href=\"http:\/\/librarianinblack.net\/librarianinblack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Librarian in Black<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naomi:<\/b>\u00a0 Best piece of job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<b>Brent:<\/b>\u00a0 Keep at it and don\u2019t think you\u2019re above any type of job. Just because a job listing says \u201centry-level\u201d or you think it\u2019s below your pay range or ability. Applysage library and come at the job with an open mind and willingness to learn. Your boss will notice. Take in every resource you can and make more library job\/school friends. They\u2019re your allies!<\/p>\n<p><i>I am a technical support specialist for the SAGE library consortium of Eastern and Central Oregon as well as being an on-call circulation aide at Beaverton Public Library. I live in the great city of Portland, Oregon and am thankful for the opportunities Oregon provides (hiking, biking, coffee-ing.
