{"id":10374,"date":"2013-03-05T11:00:39","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T16:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=10374"},"modified":"2013-05-27T13:19:07","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T17:19:07","slug":"shift-happens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=10374","title":{"rendered":"Shift Happens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Christina Wilson, Head Editor, <a title=\"INALJ Alberta\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=5931\" target=\"_blank\">INALJ Alberta<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shift Happens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/christina1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12047 alignleft\" alt=\"christina1\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/christina1.jpg\" width=\"121\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a>Recently I attended a student-run conference at the School of Library Science (SLIS), University of Alberta (Friday, February 8<sup>th<\/sup>), motivated by the opportunity to re-connect with colleagues and network for my next job, given that I\u2019ve just re-located to the community.\u00a0 \u00a0It was useful to meet the faculty teaching Alberta\u2019s next crop of librarians and hear the SLIS students present their interests and research.\u00a0\u00a0 But the best part of the day was the presence of Canada\u2019s library guru, <strong>Stephen Abram<\/strong>, whose talk <em>\u201cWorking in the Information Future:\u00a0 Non-traditional Paths in Library Work\u201d<\/em> was equal parts scary, positive and thought provoking.\u00a0 Eloquently knitting together insights on future trends and the changing work landscape, Stephen outlined how library workers must adjust attitudes to stay relevant and keep up with changing behaviours and expectations of our clientele(s).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The good news is that we\u2019re experiencing an information and knowledge based economy, so skills learned in the library field are <i>\u201cextraordinarily relevant\u201d<\/i>. \u00a0The trick for job seekers is to re-phrase our library learned skills and competencies and apply them to the trends and issues being experienced in other sectors.\u00a0 The knowledge economy is a huge opportunity that we are <i>uniquely <\/i>trained to embrace.\u00a0 Several sample lists were presented during the talk, now posted on Slideshare.com and \u201cStephen\u2019s Lighthouse\u201d located at: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/stephenslighthouse.com\/\">http:\/\/stephenslighthouse.com<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0 A version of the talk is also available at:\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/54524174\">http:\/\/vimeo.com\/54524174<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> .
