{"id":10124,"date":"2013-03-11T08:29:18","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T12:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=10124"},"modified":"2019-01-13T20:21:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T02:21:24","slug":"peter-szabo-music-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?p=10124","title":{"rendered":"Peter Szabo &#8230;Music Librarian"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #fcfc29;\">This interview is over 1 year old and may no longer be up to date or reflect the interviewee\/interviewees&#8217; positions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>by Dawn Thompson, Head Editor, <a title=\"INALJ Ohio\" href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/?page_id=5719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INALJ Ohio<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Peter Szabo &#8230;Music Librarian<\/span><\/h3>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/petersz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12960 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/petersz.jpg\" alt=\"petersz\" width=\"112\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/petersz.jpg 200w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/petersz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/petersz-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/a>Dawn:\u00a0<\/strong> How did you find your job at the Music Librarian at Ohio Wesleyan\u00a0University?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>The Music Library Association&#8217;s web site (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musiclibraryassoc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.musiclibraryassoc.<wbr \/>org\/<\/a>).\u00a0 They have a list of current openings that relate to various kinds of music librarian positions.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Dawn:\u00a0<\/strong>Tell us a little bit more about what a Music Librarian does?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>In my experience (Academic Librarianship) music librarians do a variety of things and often straddle both public and technical services, especially if a branch library is involved.\u00a0 Music librarians also teach and provide reference assistance.\u00a0 Teaching usually comes in the form of library instruction but can also involve music specific courses, like music appreciation or more advanced courses, especially if they have advanced degrees in music which many do.\u00a0 Music librarians engage in collection development for many different formats: print (books, scores), recordings (physical and electronically streamed), electronic resources (article, scores, recordings).\u00a0 Music librarians also often do cataloging which goes well with someone who has music expertise.\u00a0 Lastly, music librarians often research and publish in music and\/or library science.\u00a0\u00a0Again, my description is in terms of academic music librarianship (which is what I do) but there are other types of music librarian positions &#8211; for Public libraries, Symphony orchestras, Radio stations, and more.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Dawn:\u00a0<\/strong>Favorite library you have been to?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>New York Public Library; Ohio State&#8217;s newly renovated main library; University of Kentucky&#8217;s main library; University at Buffalo&#8217;s Music Library<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Dawn:\u00a0<\/strong>Favorite book? \u00a0Favorite musical recording?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>I&#8217;ve got more favorite recordings than books &#8211; One of my favorit<a href=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Picture-for-INALJ-page.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6438 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/inalj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Picture-for-INALJ-page.jpg\" alt=\"Picture for INALJ page\" width=\"136\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a>es is the Brecker Brothers&#8217; self entitled album.\u00a0 That&#8217;s some great funk.\u00a0 I also love the Chamber Orchestra of Europe&#8217;s recordings of the Beethoven symphonies.\u00a0 Miles Davis&#8217; &#8220;Kind of Blue&#8221; is also on the top of my list &#8211; and probably most jazz enthusiasts.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Dawn:\u00a0<\/strong>Any websites, blogs or feeds we should be following?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>A blog that I find interesting (and useful) is &#8220;the scholarly kitchen&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/scholarlykitchen.<wbr \/>sspnet.org\/<\/a>), produced by the Society for Scholarly Publishing.\u00a0 It deals with various issues related to scholarly communication.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Dawn:\u00a0 <\/strong>Any job hunting advice?<br \/>\n<strong>Peter:\u00a0 <\/strong>Spend time on your cover letter and tailor it to the job that you&#8217;re applying for.\u00a0 I hear that cover letters are becoming a lost art &#8211; don&#8217;t let it happen to you!\u00a0 Also, it helps to monitor sites that include job postings &#8211; professional organizations that are either national or local.\u00a0 For example, as I mentioned earlier, the Music Library Association&#8217;s web site posts jobs related to music librarianship that open up all over the country.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s also a good idea to keep an eye on more regional job lists.\u00a0 The state of Ohio has several.\u00a0 Lastly, be patient.\u00a0 It might take you a while to find the right fit.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>Peter Szabo\u00a0has been the Music Librarian at Ohio Wesleyan since 2003. He develops and maintains the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.owu.edu\/libmusic.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kinnison Music Library<\/a>, provides reference assistance, and teaches information literacy sessions for music faculty members. In addition to his duties as the music librarian, Peter is also a part-time Public Services librarian at Ohio Wesleyan&#8217;s main library (Beeghly) where he holds office hours and is liaison to 4 other academic departments, including: Black World Studies, \u2018Ancient, Medieval, &amp; Renaissance Studies\u2019, Philosophy, Religion, and Fine Arts.
