A Change You Might Not Even Notice

inalj june 201 collageNext week INALJ will undergo a significant change in its volunteer structure…and if I was not sharing this with you you might not even notice once it happened.  That is intentional.  The change is to lesson the time each volunteer spends on INALJ, while concentrating the web maintenance down to a few key members, as opposed to the 63 head editors all individually updating the site.  It is not to change what we do.  So why even share that this change will be happening?  Because LIS professionals are highly observant and I wanted a statement online that my editors could point to if anyone did have a question.  So the change:

WHAT POSITIONS ARE GOING?

The Head Editor position is being split into two new positions as of Monday.  Head Editors, one for every state/province/country page that we cover, started in January 2013.  They spent on average 10 hours a week managing assistants, adding jobs, finding and formatting jobs and blogging. We found that this is too many people to keep track of and that page updating (though random and rare) was suffering.
WHAT ARE THE NEW POSITIONS?

Senior Editors & Senior Assistants are the new titles for the split duties of the former Head Editor positions.  Senior Editors will be responsible for deleting old jobs and adding new ones that are sent to them already formatted.  Each Senior Editor will maintain anywhere from 3-8 pages and average 7-8 hours a week.  This smaller group of former Head Editors will ensure that the pages are updated Monday-Friday, no exceptions.  Senior Assistants will find and format jobs for the pages 5 days a week and spend an hour a day on this task.  Not bad and a much more reasonable time commitment for LIS volunteers, many of whom either work or are on the job hunt themselves.

HOW DO I VOLUNTEER?

Easy, all the info you need is on our Volunteer at INALJ page!

If you are interested in joining our volunteer work please contact us.  The info is within the link.  I am so humbled and proud of the work my volunteers do and make no mistake, this is work.  Thanks to everyone who has let us know they found their jobs on INALJ.  That is why we do this!   Raise a glass to many more successes.

Naomi House, MLIS, is the founder and publisher of the popular webzine and jobs list INALJ.com (formerly I Need a Library Job) and former CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of T160K.org, a crowdfunding platform focused on African patrimony, heritage and cultural projects. INALJ was founded in October 2010 with the assistance of her fellow Rutgers classmate, Elizabeth Leonard. Its social media presence has grown to include Facebook (retired in 2016), Twitter and a LinkedIn group, in addition to the interviews, articles and jobs found on INALJ. INALJ has had over 21 Million page hits and helped many, many thousands of librarians find employment! Through grassroots marketing, word of mouth and a real focus on exploring unconventional resources for job leads, INALJ grew from a subscription base of 20 friends to a website with over 500,000 visits in one month. Naomi believes that well-sourced quantity is quality in this narrow job market and INALJ reflects this with many new jobs published daily. She has also written for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 LexisNexis Government Info Pro and many other publications in the past decade. She presents whenever she can, including serving on three panels at the American Library Association's Annual Conference in Las Vegas; as breakout presenter at OCLC EMEA in Cape Town, South Africa; as a keynote speaker at the Virginia Library Association annual meeting; at the National Press Club in Washington DC; McGill University in Montreal, Canada; the University of the Emirates, Dubai, MLIS program and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Naomi was a Reference, Marketing and Acquisitions Librarian for a contractor at a federal library outside Washington, DC, and has been living and working in Budapest, Hungary and Western New York State. She spent years running her husband’s moving labor website, fixed and sold old houses and assisted her husband cooking delicious Pakistani food. She is preparing to re-enter the workforce and is job hunting. Her husband is now the co-editor of INALJ, a true support!  She has heard of spare time but hasn’t encountered it lately. She pronounces INALJ as eye-na-elle-jay.
