Naomi House’s interview with success story Amelia.

ameliakNaomi:  How did you find your current job?
Amelia:  I found my current position by applying for a job for Southwest Florida College at their Fort Myers, FL campus. Unfortunately the college never filled that position, but lucky for me they kept my résumé on file, and a few months later the college called and asked if I was interested in interviewing for their campus librarian position at their Port Charlotte campus. I drove down for an interview and the next day they offered me the position.

Naomi:  Favorite library you have been to?
Amelia:  My favorite library that I’ve been to is the campus library of Rhodes College located in Memphis, TN. Red brick walls crawling with ivy, gothic leaded glass windows, state of the art technology, and books everywhere!

Naomi:  Favorite book?
Amelia:  My favorite book is The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. What girl wouldn’t love a story about a heroine in a fantasy land discovering herself and what she can truly accomplish be being true to herself?

Naomi:  Favorite thing about libraries/ library technology?
Amelia:  My favorite thing about libraries and their use of technology is free information accessibility. No one should have to go through life ignorant of the world, and all it’s information, around them.

Naomi:  Best piece of job hunting advice?
Amelia:  My best piece of job hunting advice is patience and persistence. It took me over a year from my date of graduation to land the awesome job I now have as the campus librarian for Southwest Florida College. Even though it took what felt like forever to get hired, I never stopped looking, applying, and networking. So don’t give up! I’m 23 years old and running a college library as my first job. If I did it so can you!

P.S: Always send a sincere thank- you e-mail after your first interview. My new employers told me its what pushed me ahead of the other candidates. They informed me that my letter said more about me than my resume. Just some food for thought!

My name is Amelia and I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2010 with my B.A in History and in 2011 with my M.A in Library & Information Science. I work, live, and grew up in South Florida where I love to run, go to the beach, and discover new places to explore and new friends to make!
