New Year’s Resolutions: LIS Edition

sandra1It’s that time of the year again. The time to look back on all the year’s events and truly think about what you might want the New Year to bring. Join me as these fellow LIS professionals think about what’s to come in 2014.

“My resolutions for 2014 are: to increase student awareness of our college resources (library, tutoring and writing center and counseling center services) and to aid students with their educational and lifelong successes. I just applied for a grant to put on an open house at MiraCosta’s Community Learning Center highlighting these resources!”
– Alexandra Doyle Bauer

“Even though it may seem odd for a librarian, I am hoping to do less reading and more writing this year in the hopes of making a loved one’s dream come true.”
– Camille Salas (@unacamisa)

“My resolution for the New Year is to continue working on scoping out the right resources for my users. For me, the goal of librarianship is to maximize findability of resources for users, and facilitate the best user experience possible.”
– Carlos Martinez, III  (@CarlosMtz3)

“To continue combating library stereotypes, and to do my best to uphold the banner that, much like our users, not all librarians are made from the same cloth.”
– Mack Simon, Jr.

“In 2014, I would like to read at least five journal articles or blog posts per week discussing new developments in the field.”
– MD Librarian

“As I’m just about to enter my last semester at SJSU, my resolutions all pretty much come down to translating my MLIS into an awesome youth services gig at a public library.”
– Meredith Sires (@mersires)

“My resolution is to check out more of the libraries in my area. I currently live in Italy and think it would be fascinating to see how other international librarians, and LIS professionals, conduct their business on a daily basis.”

– Sandra Hoyer

“In 2014, I resolve the following…

1.  If I have the opportunity (time and money/grant) to take a certification class or to sharpen a skill (i.e. Photoshop on Skillshare.com)–do it.

2.  Schedule out my day/week and stick to it.

3.  Squeeze in time to:  work out (30 minutes exercise 5x day); do art (20 minutes every morning draw something in sketch book) to keep things “balanced.”

4.  Do free librarian work for someone in need at least once a month.  (There are lots of homeless neighbors I have or people with no access to information that could use me.  I can help a friend or neighbor navigate medical health care sights or Covered California.)

5.  See my parents.

6.  Do whatever it takes to get to Barcelona in February for my birthday!

7.  Write my comic each Sunday (or pick a day).

8.  Finish housing a collection at the Center before March.

9.  Do more of the following:  yoga, swimming, walking, looking for FT archives/library work, writing, cooking, cleaning, organizing, archiving, planning, creating, blogging, cartooning, painting, working…

10.  Remember to always re-frame any negative statement that I have in my head (or comes out of my mouth).  Replace any doubt I may have with myself and always strive to do my best. “

INALJ has had over 21 Million page hits and helped many, many thousands of librarians find employment! Through grassroots marketing, word of mouth and a real focus on exploring unconventional resources for job leads, INALJ grew from a subscription base of 20 friends to a website with over 500,000 visits in one month. She presents whenever she can, including serving on three panels at the American Library Association's Annual Conference in Las Vegas; as breakout presenter at OCLC EMEA in Cape Town, South Africa; as a keynote speaker at the Virginia Library Association annual meeting; at the National Press Club in Washington DC; McGill University in Montreal, Canada; the University of the Emirates, Dubai, MLIS program and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Naomi was a Reference, Marketing and Acquisitions Librarian for a contractor at a federal library outside Washington, DC, and has been living and working in Budapest, Hungary and Western New York State. She spent years running her husband’s moving labor website, fixed and sold old houses and assisted her husband cooking delicious Pakistani food. She is preparing to re-enter the workforce and is job hunting. Her husband is now the co-editor of INALJ, a true support!  She has heard of spare time but hasn’t encountered it lately. She pronounces INALJ as eye-na-elle-jay.
