Shannon Schinagl …In Six

My interview with success story Shannon

Naomi: How did you find your current job?
Shannon: Using the INALJ digest, I checked each of the New England states each week. When an opening came up, I applied. I have to say that even though it was expensive, I did offer to fly out from Seattle to interview. I think that’s what got me this job!

Naomi: Favorite library you have been to?
Shannon: My favorite library is the downtown branch of the Juneau Public Library in Alaska. It’s on top of a parking garage, which I think is a genius use of space!

Naomi: Favorite book?
Shannon: Keeping in mind that I’m a children’s librarian, the book(s) that I read again and again are the Chronicles of Narnia.

Naomi: Favorite thing about libraries/ library technology?
Shannon: My favorite thing about libraries is that I truly believe they are the last pure democratic institutions in the United States.

Naomi: Any websites or feeds or blogs we should be following?
Shannon: The website I use the most as a public librarian is: www.stopyourekillingme.com. It’s a mysteries website that allows you to search by author, character, and location, and lists series in order. I wouldn’t be able to help my patrons half so well or efficiently without it, plus I use it a ton for myself.

Naomi: Best piece of job hunting advice?
Shannon: No matter what kind of library job you are applying for, make sure you know exactly who your patrons will be. For example, if you’re applying for a public library job, use the new census website to find out the demographics. If you are applying for a special libraries job, find out exactly who your patrons will be. Use that information to frame the answers to the interview questions very specifically.

I have a been a children’s librarian for 11 years. I have always worked for big library systems and decided I needed a change! In looking for a single library, I discovered that New England is the place to be. I will now be the Head Children’s Librarian at the Newburyport Public Library!

She is preparing to re-enter the workforce and is job hunting. Her husband is now the co-editor of INALJ, a true support!  She has heard of spare time but hasn’t encountered it lately.
